NARAL Pro-Choice America has dropped its opposition to a federal bill requiring anesthesia for fetuses over 20 weeks old, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/16\/politics\/16abortion.html?th \">according to the New York Times<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/leg1.state.va.us\/cgi-bin\/legp504.exe?051+sum+HB1524 \">A similar bill<\/a> has passed the Virginia House of Delegates, with support from a few Democrats, and awaits Senate action.<\/p>\n<p>While I support Roe v. Wade, I wish the Dems and pro-choice folks would focus more on measures that obviate abortions and hold Republicans accountable when they are indifferent to such measures, as when they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailypress.com\/news\/dp-65248sy0feb14,1,458344.story \">withhold funding<\/a> (scroll down story) from groups like Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/etc.mhtml?pid=2558\">New Republic blog<\/a> and Washington Monthly\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2005_02\/005669.php\">Political Animal<\/a> have more on the issue of Dems using contraception as a \u201cwedge\u201d issue.  I\u2019ve written before how, at least in Virginia, there\u2019s seems to be <a href=\"http:\/\/commonwealthcommonsense.typepad.com\/commonwealthcommonsense\/2005\/01\/not_only_in_vir.html\">a move to restrict contraception<\/a>, given the bill against Planned Parenthood and the defeat of Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple\u2019s effort <a href=\"http:\/\/commonwealthcommonsense.typepad.com\/commonwealthcommonsense\/2005\/01\/contraception_t.html\">to define contraception<\/a> so it can\u2019t be considered abortion.
