{"id":413,"date":"2008-10-10T13:00:27","date_gmt":"2008-10-10T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2008\/10\/10\/ny-times-mccain-made-us-do-it\/"},"modified":"2008-10-10T13:00:27","modified_gmt":"2008-10-10T17:00:27","slug":"ny-times-mccain-made-us-do-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2008\/10\/10\/ny-times-mccain-made-us-do-it\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Times: McCain Made Us Do It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You often hear from conservatives that the mainstream media are in the tank for Obama.&nbsp; I wonder how many conservatives are going to object to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/1008\/14457.html\">startling admission<\/a> by the New York Times.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>[Bill Keller, executive editor of The Times] told Politico that the paper was motivated to report out the [former 60s radical William] Ayers link because the McCain campaign has been pushing it \u2014 not the other way around. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve reported the Ayers relationship before, and we had it on our \u2018to do\u2019 list for a while to take a more comprehensive look,\u201d Keller said, in an e-mail. \u201cWhen the McCain campaign began to make it a major focal point of ads and stump speeches, we decided the time was right.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn&#8217;t take any prodding,\u201d Keller continued. \u201cWhen the conversation on something controversial reaches a certain level, curious readers look to The Times to help them sort the facts from the fictions and figure out what to make of it. That&#8217;s what we did.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, because John McCain wanted to spread the story &#8212; one that has been reported many times since the connection between Obama and Ayers first surfaced &#8212; the Times obliged.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll say this &#8217;til I&#8217;m blue in the face:&nbsp; Demand the media cover a a story you want and they will oblige.&nbsp; They have relinquished any pretense of being a filter.&nbsp; They are simply a conduit for whatever campaigns want, if the story is salacious or likely to be controversial.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s prepare for the in-depth story of whether evolution or creationism is the true science.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You often hear from conservatives that the mainstream media are in the tank for Obama.&nbsp; I wonder how many conservatives are going to object to a startling admission by the New York Times.
