{"id":265,"date":"2009-06-04T22:07:01","date_gmt":"2009-06-05T02:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/06\/04\/the-blowback-begins\/"},"modified":"2009-06-04T22:07:01","modified_gmt":"2009-06-05T02:07:01","slug":"the-blowback-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/06\/04\/the-blowback-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"The Blowback Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eight minutes ago, the New York Times posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/05\/world\/middleeast\/05prexy.html?hp\">this article<\/a> about Obama\u2019s speech today in Egypt.&#160; The Israeli lobby has already made its mark, as the article accuses Obama of being too harsh on Israel.<\/p>\n<p>How much longer before he is accused of being anti-Semitic?<\/p>\n<p>The lede:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In opening a bold overture to the Islamic world on Thursday, President Obama confronted frictions between Muslims and the West, but he reserved some of his bluntest words for Israel, as he expressed sympathy for the Palestinians and what he called the \u201cdaily humiliations, large and small, that come with occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Mr. Obama emphasized that America\u2019s bond with Israel was \u201cunbreakable,\u201d he spoke in equally powerful terms of the Palestinian people, describing their plight as \u201cintolerable\u201d after 60 years of statelessness, and twice referring to \u201cPalestine\u201d in a way that put Palestinians on parallel footing with Israelis.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Good forbid that we should put Palestinians on \u201cparallel footing\u201d with Israelis.<\/p>\n<p>It is, in order, the headline, the lede and the conclusion that you must care about in judging an article\u2019s impact.&#160; The headline, online at least, is neutral.&#160; But in addition to the lede, the Israelis got the conclusion, too.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Although Mr. Obama strongly condemned those who would deny the Holocaust, many American supporters of Israel said they resented what they viewed as comparing it to the plight of the Palestinians. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand Palestinian suffering, it is terrible,\u201d said Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League. \u201cBut it is not on the other hand to the Holocaust.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eight minutes ago, the New York Times posted this article about Obama\u2019s speech today in Egypt.&#160; The Israeli lobby has already made its mark, as the article accuses Obama of being too harsh on Israel.
