{"id":1745,"date":"2009-09-27T10:26:51","date_gmt":"2009-09-27T14:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/09\/27\/post-reporter-promotes-conservative-terminology\/"},"modified":"2009-09-27T10:26:51","modified_gmt":"2009-09-27T14:26:51","slug":"post-reporter-promotes-conservative-terminology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/09\/27\/post-reporter-promotes-conservative-terminology\/","title":{"rendered":"Post Reporter Promotes Conservative Terminology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Washington Post <\/em>reporter Anita Kumar, by her own admission, promoted the language conservatives use to describe late-term abortions <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/09\/26\/AR2009092602516.html?hpid=moreheadlines\">in her article<\/a> about Creigh Deeds\u2019 and Bob McDonnell\u2019s legislative records.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>McDonnell supported bills that banned a procedure <strong>some of its opponents refer to as partial-birth abortion<\/strong>, required minors to obtain parental consent before getting an abortion and mandated a 24-hour waiting period for women seeking one.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So after admitting that the terminology is the language conservatives want her to use, Kumar writes in the very next paragraph.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Deeds supported bills that required parents to be notified if their child was seeking an abortion but not bills that required parental consent or a waiting period. <strong>He voted for a ban on partial-birth abortion<\/strong> but later changed his mind because he said he worried that the bills were unconstitutional. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A neutral description would be a \u201clate-term abortion\u201d or \u201can abortion in the final three months of a pregnancy\u201d and \u201cthe later abortions\u201d on second reference.<\/p>\n<p>You see this with other right-wing propaganda that reporters adopt, death taxes being the one that first comes to mind.<\/p>\n<p>The question for Kumar is, why, after admitting it\u2019s the term right-wingers want, she decided to use it instead of a more neutral term?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post reporter Anita Kumar, by her own admission, promoted the language conservatives use to describe late-term abortions in her article about Creigh Deeds\u2019 and Bob McDonnell\u2019s legislative records.
