{"id":1724,"date":"2009-10-28T18:09:27","date_gmt":"2009-10-28T22:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/10\/28\/dismal-quality-of-many-big-papers\/"},"modified":"2009-10-28T18:09:27","modified_gmt":"2009-10-28T22:09:27","slug":"dismal-quality-of-many-big-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/10\/28\/dismal-quality-of-many-big-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"&lsquo;Dismal Quality of Many Big Papers&rsquo;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is much gnashing of teeth over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editorandpublisher.com\/eandp\/news\/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1004030291\" target=\"_blank\">erosion of newspaper readers<\/a>.&#160; Former <em>Washington Post <\/em>online journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/recoveringjournalist.typepad.com\/recovering_journalist\/2009\/10\/when-presses-roll-less-execs-spin-more.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Potts says<\/a> sure the economy and the Internet are reasons for the slide, but<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Probably hardest to measure, but certainly a factor in the decline, is the increasingly dismal quality of many big papers as the result of slashing staff cuts over the past couple of years (and don&#8217;t expect those cuts to be over, especially with ongoing declines like these circulation figures). Many American dailies, not very good to begin with, are turning into virtual shoppers; even the best papers are noticeably reduced versions of their former selves, as coverage has been pruned and sections shrunken or dropped.
