{"id":169,"date":"2009-10-16T11:46:49","date_gmt":"2009-10-16T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/10\/16\/interracial-couple-denied-marriage-license\/"},"modified":"2009-10-16T11:46:49","modified_gmt":"2009-10-16T15:46:49","slug":"interracial-couple-denied-marriage-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2009\/10\/16\/interracial-couple-denied-marriage-license\/","title":{"rendered":"Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve been told we\u2019ve entered a post-racial society with the election of the offspring of an interracial couple.&#160; Not quite. <\/p>\n<p>A Louisiana justice of the peace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/US\/10\/16\/louisiana.interracial.marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\">refused to issue a marriage license<\/a> to an interracial couple because<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>He was concerned for the children who might be born of the relationship and that, in his experience, most interracial marriages don&#8217;t last.<\/p>\n<h6>&quot;I&#8217;m not a racist,&quot; [JP Keith] Bardwell told the newspaper. &quot;I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house. My main concern is for the children.&quot;<\/h6>\n<p>Bardwell [said he couldn&#8217;t personally endorse the marriage.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s OK, Keith.&#160; We understand.&#160; It\u2019s just like the pharmacists who won\u2019t dispense contraceptives even if they are legal.&#160; Right?&#160; If it offends you, just say no.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Keep an eye out for the next development in this series of \u201cGoing My Way\u201d decisions.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we\u2019ll see police officers refusing to investigate black on black crimes because police feel this is an internal problem in the black community, and they really need to take care of it themselves.&#160; Or perhaps it will be fireman who refused to put out a house fire because they believe the house is a blight on the neighborhood and really needed to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe we take him at his word.&#160; Bardwell was \u201cconcerned for the children\u201d who might, he feared, one day become president of the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve been told we\u2019ve entered a post-racial society with the election of the offspring of an interracial couple.&#160; Not quite.
