{"id":1619,"date":"2011-01-05T17:04:18","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T22:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2011\/01\/05\/oppo-research-on-reporters\/"},"modified":"2011-01-05T17:04:18","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T22:04:18","slug":"oppo-research-on-reporters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2011\/01\/05\/oppo-research-on-reporters\/","title":{"rendered":"Oppo Research on Reporters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Who is trying <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5725466\/the-desperate-campaign-to-discredit-jane-mayer\" target=\"_blank\">to discredit the reporter<\/a> who wrote about the ultra-conservative Koch brothers?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There have been at least three efforts so far:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Washington Examiner (which <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/blogs\/beltway-confidential\/new-yorker-s-shameful-attack-conservative-philanthropists-charles-and-davi\">editorialized<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/blogs\/examiner-opinion-zone\/defense-koch-and-opportunity\">extensively<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/left039s-double-standard-kochs-and-soros\">against<\/a> Mayer&#8217;s Koch brothers piece) did research trying to turn up evidence of Mayer&#8217;s political partisanship; they apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/search\/apachesolr_search\/Jane%20Mayer?filters=created%3A[2010-01-01T00%3A00%3A00Z%20TO%202011-01-01T00%3A00%3A00Z]\">didn&#8217;t find anything<\/a> worth reporting. <\/li>\n<li>Elaine Lafferty wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/blogs-and-stories\/2010-09-10\/billionaire-david-koch-fires-back-at-the-new-yorker\/?cid=tag:all1\">a pro-Koch response<\/a> to Mayer&#8217;s story in The Daily Beast, complete with friendly quotes from <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/tag\/davidkoch\/\">David Koch<\/a>\u2014who was unwilling to speak with Mayer herself. TDB later added an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/blogs-and-stories\/2010-09-10\/billionaire-david-koch-fires-back-at-the-new-yorker\/2\/\">editor&#8217;s note<\/a> to the story admitting, among other things, that they &quot;should have noted that the writer who interviewed Koch had been a consultant for the McCain\/Palin campaign.&quot; <\/li>\n<li>And today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/business\/smear_disappears_Xs7WqA7cghZ3IWtmyDg7rO\">Keith Kelly reports<\/a> on a third incident: The Daily Caller spent &quot;several weeks&quot; investigating a story that Mayer plagiarized work in her Koch brothers article, and in another story years ago.
