{"id":1467,"date":"2004-03-19T12:29:10","date_gmt":"2004-03-19T17:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2004\/03\/19\/virginia_news_11-2\/"},"modified":"2004-03-19T12:29:10","modified_gmt":"2004-03-19T17:29:10","slug":"virginia_news_11-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2004\/03\/19\/virginia_news_11-2\/","title":{"rendered":"VIRGINIA NEWS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday\u2019s machinations in Richmond highlighted that not only were philosophical differences seemingly insurmountable, lawmakers don\u2019t even count the same way and\/or reporters don\u2019t report the same way.<\/p>\n<p>Both the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.hamptonroads.com\/stories\/story.cfm?story=67721&#038;ran=193800 \">Norfolk Virginian-Pilot<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailypress.com\/news\/local\/dp-78385sy0mar19,0,5769276.story?coll=dp-news-local-final \">Hampton Roads Daily Press<\/a> report the House plan to eliminate sales tax exemptions on businesses would generate $561 million in revenue, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle%2FRTD_BasicArticle&#038;c=MGArticle&#038;cid=1031774384158&#038;path=%21news%21politics&#038;s=1031773094959 \">Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/a> reports the Dept. of Taxation says it will only raise $150 million.  <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to confirm they\u2019re all talking either apples or oranges.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor and delegates are also sparing <a href=\"http:\/\/home.hamptonroads.com\/stories\/story.cfm?story=67715&#038;ran=240398 \">over how much the budget has gone up<\/a> and how much is in the House plan <a href=\"http:\/\/customwire.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/V\/VA_XGR_SESSION_OF_SPITE_VAOL-?SITE=VAROA&#038;SECTION=HOME&#038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT \">for schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But House delegates know the number 115.  That\u2019s the dollar amount per day they voted for themselves while they obstruct the budget process.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/home.hamptonroads.com\/stories\/story.cfm?story=67721&#038;ran=193800 \">Pilot story<\/a> tells us how much it cost the state.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the tone is getting nastier and the politics rougher.  Del. Brian Moran (D-Alexandria) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A6133-2004Mar18.html \">said<\/a>, &#8220;Today was a demonstration of raw arrogance of power. It&#8217;s childish and its immature and it&#8217;s no way to govern.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>The GOP said it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/metro\/20040318-103703-8366r.htm\">partly pay back<\/a>, but some of their own don\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n<p>Even the conservative Times-Dispatch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle%2FRTD_BasicArticle&#038;c=MGArticle&#038;cid=1031774381169&#038;path=%21editorials&#038;s=1045855934983 \">editorial page<\/a> is wondering why the House can\u2019t get a budget done, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.hamptonroads.com\/stories\/story.cfm?story=67699&#038;ran=106962 \">Pilot<\/a> takes one of its own delegates to task. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle%2FRTD_BasicArticle&#038;c=MGArticle&#038;cid=1031774389180&#038;path=%21news%21politics&#038;s=1031773094959 \">new study<\/a> suggests a tax hike on tobacco won\u2019t hurt state jobs.<\/p>\n<p>There you go again, Washington Times.  This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/metro\/20040318-103706-6404r.htm \">story<\/a> is headlined \u201cVirginia residents fear tax increases.\u201d  But is based on interviews with \u201cmore than a dozen Virginians.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen?  I\u2019ll bet some statistician would have a field day with that small a sample size.  And in the story, the Times only quotes six people.  So, OK, they\u2019ve talked to a least 13 people and six of them are against higher taxes (although the quotes suggests some are conflicted).  Does that merit the headline?
