{"id":133,"date":"2010-04-02T10:56:59","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2010\/04\/02\/politics-the-way-it-used-to-be\/"},"modified":"2010-04-02T10:56:59","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:56:59","slug":"politics-the-way-it-used-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2010\/04\/02\/politics-the-way-it-used-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Politics the Way It Used to Be"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given what many think is a poisonous political climate, I harken back to an earlier time.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the House of Representatives gave John Quincy Adams the presidency, his rivals, especially his former ally Andrew Jackson, were incensed.&#160; (Jackson had won the plurality of electoral college votes but lost the vote in the House due to Speaker Henry Clay\u2019s influence.)&#160; In the early days of the junior Adams\u2019 administration, Latin American countries, many of which recently won their freedom from Spain, proposed a Panama Conference to discuss common objectives and pursue alliances.&#160; Adams\u2019 opponents didn\u2019t like the idea, especially Virginia senator John Randolph.&#160; An accomplished orator, despite an unusually high-pitched voice that was a result of illness, Randolph went after Clay who was advocating the United States\u2019 participation in the conference..&#160; Randolph, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteastronomy.com\/topics\/John_Randolph_of_Roanoke\" target=\"_blank\">who once said<\/a>, \u201cI am an aristocrat.&#160; I love liberty, I hate equality,\u201d called the conference \u201ca Kentucky cuckoo\u2019s egg, laid in a Spanish-American nest.\u201d&#160; Clay, of course, was from Kentucky.&#160; Randolph said the conference was the result of \u201cthe coalition of Blifil and Black George,\u201d a reference to disreputable characters in the novel <em>Tom Jones.&#160; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Clay was incensed and challenged Randolph to a duel, \u201cwhich ended with the Kentuckian firing a bullet into the Virginian\u2019s coat and the irrepressible Virginian firing into the air.&#160; Then they shook hands.
