The writer defended the Israeli army\u2019s recent raid in the Gaza Strip, quoting from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A37726-2004May18.html\">story<\/a>: &#8220;The Israeli army . . . said that 17 of the 19 dead Palestinians were militants.&#8221;  Because so many were militants, the loss of civilians could be excused.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll often find phrases such as \u201cthe Israeli army said\u201d or \u201caccording to the Israeli army\u201d in stories about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  More than 100 <em>Post<\/em> articles in the past three years have used such phrases.  It\u2019s important to keep in mind the source.  Because the army said 17 of the 19 were militants doesn\u2019t mean there were.  We really don\u2019t know how many of the Palestinian dead were militants and how many were innocents caught up in Israeli\u2019s revenge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A letter to the editor in The Washington Post caught my eye this morning.
