{"id":1094,"date":"2004-09-28T19:51:18","date_gmt":"2004-09-28T23:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/000af36.netsolhost.com\/wordpress1\/2004\/09\/28\/doj_intimidatio\/"},"modified":"2004-09-28T19:51:18","modified_gmt":"2004-09-28T23:51:18","slug":"doj_intimidatio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/griendling.com\/wordpress1\/2004\/09\/28\/doj_intimidatio\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ Intimidation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Ashcroft has decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/local\/wire\/ny-bc-ny--nytimeslawsuit0928sep28,0,1772087.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire\">get the phone records of two New York Times reporters<\/a> in an investigation of leaks to them about a planned raid upon, and freezing assets of, Islamic organizations shortly after the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n<p>When the Justice Dept. couldn\u2019t obtain them from the Times, the DOJ says they\u2019ll get them \u201cfrom third parties unlikely to be interested in challenging its authority.\u201d  Sounds like the phone (\u201cWe don\u2019t care \u2018cause we don\u2019t have to\u201d) company to me.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just another example of the loss of freedom we\u2019re suffering under this administration.  It\u2019s blatant attempt to intimidate sources who will worry that if they talk to reporters, the DOJ can at any time get records that would expose them.
