Now at last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A7967-2004Oct28.html \">what is described<\/a> as \u201c[o]ne of the first attempts to independently estimate the loss of civilian life from the Iraqi war\u2026.\u201d  has given us a number:  \u201c\u2026at least 100,000 Iraqi civilians may <a href=\"http:\/\/commonwealthcommonsense.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/iraq_death_rates.gif\"><img class=\"image-full\" alt=\"Iraq_death_rates\" title=\"Iraq_death_rates\" src=\"http:\/\/commonwealthcommonsense.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/iraq_death_rates.gif\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" \/><\/a>have died because of the U.S. invasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The researchers called their estimate conservative because they excluded deaths in Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that has been the scene of particularly intense fighting and has accounted for a disproportionately large number of deaths in the survey. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are quite confident that there&#8217;s been somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 deaths, but it could be much higher,&#8221; Roberts said. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Others aren\u2019t so sure.  A Human Rights Watch analyst thought the numbers were \u201cinflated.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Even if it\u2019s inflated, there are tens of thousands of civilians who have died.  Forty-six percent of the deaths were of children under the age of 15.
