New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer ruled yesterday that jurisdictions in the state performing gay marriages are breaking the law but that valid gay marriages or civil unions performed in other states must be recognized by the state. Such idiosyncratic decisions by varying jurisdictions and officials and the speed with which this issue is advancing make it a fascinating story.
But I’m keeping one eye over my shoulder to ward off the catastrophe gay unions will have on the “institution of marriage.” Surely there must be something behind the right’s criticism. Surely?
